A global pandemic, protests, presidential election, murder hornets, and a toilet paper shortage. The year 2020 has been nothing less than crazy including the
production of our new short film, 'Orchid Daydreams'.
This short film was done entirely in quarantine. The writing, auditions, film shoot, editing, and composing. It was a wild, ambitious thought that became reality as soon as we started getting self-tapes for the first round of auditions, and even more when the first day of production started. What do you get when you put a bunch of passionate artists together who are determined to make a place for themselves in the landscape of the film industry in a COVID world? Four days of remote filming, one day of remote voiceover, and two weeks of remote post-production.
We learned so much through this experience than any film school could ever teach us, and we went to film school. We learned how to collaborate as a team while giving instructions through Zoom. We learned how to film remotely and use the resources we already own. We learned how to problem solve while being miles apart. We also learned to be patient with our family members trying to help us out. Most importantly, we learned to appreciate the people who work in all of the departments on set that would have been there on a normal film shoot. As if filming wasn't crazy enough, during post our director/writer/editor [Marisa] was diagnosed with Covid-19. So I [Jessica] had to step in to edit the second half of the film so we could finish by our deadline. A project that was a work of passion became a test of our resilience. (Hopefully, we passed.)
Now we are entering the film festival phase. We can't wait till the world sees what we've been working on. Hope everyone enjoys our film as much as we've enjoyed bringing it to life.
